The Story About Grandpa Hicks Cheese & Gourmet Over 25 years ago, Pat Irwin’s father—affectionately known as Grandpa Hick—bought a 1933 Model “B” Ford wagon once used for huckstering fruits and vegetables during the Depression. Pat and Bill Irwin soon had the idea to use this “huckster wagon” to sell cookies and fresh squeezed juices in or around historic New Hope, Pennsylvania. In 1981 they parked their truck in Peddler’s Village in nearby Lahaska, and have been a landmark ever since. On sunny weekends all spring, summer and fall, hundreds of visitors now buy Philadelphia-style soft pretzels and cold drinks off the back of Grandpa Hick’s old Ford. In 1986, the Irwins expanded their business by opening Grandpa Hicks Cheese and Gourmet. Located on the corner of Route 263 and Street Road in Peddler’s Village, the 1,200 square-foot shop serves as a purveyor of gourmet foods, imported and domestic cheeses, coffee, tea, jams and jellies, mustards, oils, spices and unique culinary-inspired gifts. An adjacent room houses over 400 varieties of hot sauce (some with hilariously themed labels)! The shop also offers a variety of items specially produced for Grandpa Hicks, providing customers with the perfect present or keepsake. The Irwins and their knowledgeable staff create gift boxes and baskets for all occasions, made to suit individual specifications and price ranges, and available for shipment around the world. Grandpa Hicks hosts numerous tasting events and food demonstrations throughout the year.
